About Us
WHO ARE
WE?
Cosmos
Sports is a sports management company founded by Cary
Kaplan and his wife Amelia.
Cosmos
Sports has taken a simple maxim to ‘win the business’,
and envisions having a positive and revolutionary
approach to the sports industry in Canada, and
ultimately significantly impacting the business of
sports for the better across the nation.
With the
fundamental cornerstones being integrity, work ethic,
positive attitude, teamwork, leadership and creativity,
Cosmos Sports is a results driven, proactive
organization.
Our
stakeholders include fans, teams, job seekers,
corporations, leagues, and athletes.
WHY
TRY?
Besides
Amelia and myself, Director of Business Operations Scott
Mosey and our entire staff have made a strong commitment
to the ongoing success of Cosmos Sports.
We have done so for a variety of reasons:
-
Because our love of sports is so strong and rather
than working in an industry that we are not
passionate for, we aspire to enjoy the 33% of our
life that we will spend in the office.
-
Because the industry needs help. Unlike the computer
industry, the packaged goods business, the banks,
insurance companies, or other, the sports management
industry remains a very young business. Often times
the business of sports is neglected in an all out
effort to win, and as a result the majority of
sports organizations continue to lose money. We are
hoping to solve this problem.
-
To
help people. Fans should be able to expect great
customer service and tremendous value at sporting
events. Employers who want sports minded employees,
should be able to find them. Athletes with great
promise and athletic ability should be able to reach
their potential through professional tryouts or
scholarships. Those fortunate enough to own pro
sports teams, should be given the opportunity to do
so and do so successfully. Cosmos Sports can act as
a liaison to help make these concepts become a
reality.
-
Demand. There is a vacuum of companies that are
assisting the various stakeholders associated with
sports, particularly in Canada.
-
Capacity. We’re very good. I have 10 years of sports
management experience, our combined staff has over
50 years of sports experience and 100 years of sales
experience. We think we can make a fundamental
difference.
WHO DO WE HELP: OUR
COSMOS
Fans
The old
adage is very true. In the battle between owners and
players, fans are often the forgotten party. The
reality, as Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart, maintained,
“we all work for our customers, they can have all us
fired by shopping somewhere else”. Similarly, fans
ultimately control the destiny of the sports industry.
Cosmos
Sports works with fans in a variety of ways. Firstly, we
work with teams to help them sell more tickets. The
largest source of revenue for every major sports team in
Canada, is gate receipts.
Cosmos
Sports through our strategic planning and ticket sales
optimization training program, has trained over 200
teams, in numerous leagues including: CFL, CHL, CSL,
ECHL, AHL, UHL, SPHL, NAHL, AFL, CBA, NBDL, NBL, CanAm,
AmAssoc, PCL, FSL and others.
One of the key ingredients in our program is to educate
sports teams, league and associations on the needs and
relevance of the fans. Without fans, there are no teams
and no leagues.
Athletes
Cosmos
Sports presently represents over 50 athletes from
throughout North America and from a variety of sports
backgrounds. Our unique 15 point program designed and
implemented by our Director of Athlete Management, Scott
Mosey, is unique to the industry.
Unlike
agents, we don’t promise contracts. Rather, we make our
best efforts to maximize the opportunity for athletes to
receive athletic scholarships or achieve professional
tryouts.
Through a
comprehensive package providing everything from athlete
profiles and CD Roms, to pro scouting and liaisons with
coaches, the Cosmos Sports Athlete Management division
is committed to providing an ethical, effective and
powerful opportunity for those with a potential in the
sporting world.
Teams
Professional sports teams play two games. One on the
field, court, or ice and one in the front office. While
the players are generally surrounded with a strong
coaching staff, a significant scouting staff, trainers,
equipment managers, and relatively good resources, those
behind the scenes are often taken for granted.
The
McDonalds, Nike’s, Coca-Cola’s and Gillette’s of the
world understand that developing a strong product, while
essential, is only one component of building a
successful brand. McDonald’s does not sell the most
hamburgers, because they taste the best, they sell them
because of effective sales and marketing programs.
Gillette does not sell the most razors because they
provide the closest shave, they sell the most because
their sales and marketing strategy has built such a
powerful brand, that people feel good about using
Gillette products.
In sports
however, there is often an inappropriate over-emphasis
on product, a ‘winning team’. While the perception is
that a winner draws fans, the reality is that a ‘buzz’
draws fans.
Sports
Organizations
The Sports
industry is a multi billion dollar business. And while
many think of sports in terms of teams and players, the
governing bodies, the university athletic programs, the
retail sports industry, the governing bodies, the
leagues, the camps, clinics, academies, and the
thousands of other stakeholders associated with sports,
are a vital part of the infrastructure that fuels the
industry.
Cosmos
Sports has worked, and continues to work with a number
of leagues, associations and sports properties in an
effort to maximize revenues through brand building,
strategic planning, and engaging with their respective
fanbase.
Specifically, Cosmos Sports specializes in education,
recruitment, branding, innovation and implementation to
assist our partners in being more successful.
Job
Seekers
We have
created several unique vehicles for those aspiring to
work in sports.
First, we
have proudly run three successful Sports Careers
Conferences. With speakers from over 50 sports
organizations such as Maple Leaf Sports and
Entertainment, the Toronto Blue Jays and Nike Canada;
celebrities such as Elliotte Freidman, Jerry Howarth,
Doug Farraway, and Martine Gaillard; and industry
pioneers such as IMG Canada, Trojan One and Right to
Play, Cosmos Sports has had over 200 attendees learn
about the business, and in many cases begin their
respective careers in sports as a result of our event.
Secondly,
on June 1, 2004 Cosmos Sports launched the only all
sports job website in Canada, www.cosmossportsjobs.com.
In just over a year, we have attracted over 8,000 job
seekers and over 10 Million hits to the site. The
objective of cosmossportsjobs.com is to become the
number one site for those who wish to have a career in
sports.
In 2006,
we moved our division further forward with the
introduction of a Sports Management Academy whereby
individuals could experience a once in lifetime
roundtable network session with leaders of the sports
industry. Speakers in the SMA series included Dick
Pound, Ketih Pelley, Brad Watters, IMG's Glenn Young,
and MLSE's Jim Edmands and Mardi Walker.
In 2007,
the Cosmos Sports Institute was launched allowing
students to gain a high level two week training session
and then be guaranteed a job with a leading sports
organization following the training.
