The 2025 Centennial Cup wrapped up this past weekend, once again reinforcing its status as the most prestigious event in Canadian Junior A hockey. Organized by Hockey Canada and the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL), the tournament brought together ten of the nation’s top Junior A teams—including champions from each of the CJHL’s nine member leagues, along with a host city representative—for a week-long battle for national supremacy.
Hosted in Calgary, Alberta, the event delivered everything fans and scouts have come to expect: elite-level competition, standout performances from future stars, and the kind of high-stakes intensity that defines championship hockey.
The tournament culminated in a dominant 7–2 victory by the host team, the Calgary Canucks, over the Melfort Mustangs in the national championship final on Sunday, May 18. The win marked Calgary’s second national title—and their first since 1995—making them the 12th host team to win the Centennial Cup since the tournament format was introduced in 1985.
Led by captain Bowden Singleton, the Canucks put together a complete team effort, with key contributions from Hayden Fechner (2 goals, 1 assist), Jayden Joly (1 goal, 2 assists), and goaltender Lukas Renaud, who turned aside 27 shots to secure the title. After falling short in the semifinals last year, Calgary’s win was a culmination of years of culture-building and a testament to the strength of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).
“It’s everything I dreamed of,” Singleton said post-game. “There’s no better feeling doing this in front of friends and family.”
While only one team hoisted the Centennial Cup, every club involved contributed to what continues to be one of the most compelling showcases in Canadian sport.
The success of the Centennial Cup is a reflection of Junior A hockey’s growing relevance—not only in player development, but also in its value as a business and community asset. These teams are more than just pathways to the next level. They are cultural institutions, revenue-generating enterprises, and pillars of local identity.
As interest in Junior A hockey continues to rise, so too does the demand for capable and committed ownership groups. With leagues like the AJHL, OJHL, SJHL, MJHL, and others strengthening their brands and expanding their reach, the opportunity to become a part of Canada’s hockey future has never been more compelling.
“Junior Hockey in Canada has never been as exciting and robust as it is today. No other country in the world has the depth to offer a national hockey event where 35 champions come from 7 provinces to compete for one Cup. It is a testament to hockey being vital to our fabric and identity. If you have ever dreamed of owning a hockey team, and giving back to a community in a multitude of ways, Cosmos can help make that dream a reality,” said Cary Kaplan, President of Cosmos Sports & Entertainment.
