Young racers took to the track at K1 Speed St. Catharines this summer for four days of learning, competition and plenty of time behind the wheel during the Summer Speed Camp.

The camp gave young drivers the opportunity to go beyond simply racing laps and learn some of the techniques that can make a difference on the track. During the first three days, campers worked with racing instructor Ryan Dupont of Ryan D Performance Driving Instruction, developing a better understanding of how to approach each section of the circuit.

A major focus throughout the week was learning how to find the apex of a corner and understand the proper racing line. Dupont taught the drivers how their approach entering a corner can affect their exit and how choosing the right line can help carry more speed around the track.

The campers also worked on hitting their marks consistently from lap to lap. Rather than focusing only on setting one quick lap, drivers learned how repeating the correct braking points, racing lines and cornering techniques could help them become both faster and more consistent.

As the sessions continued, those improvements began to show on the timing screens. Campers were able to put what they learned into practice, producing quicker and increasingly consistent lap times as they became more comfortable identifying their marks and taking the proper lines around the circuit.

After three days of instruction and development, the fourth and final day gave the young racers an opportunity to put their new skills to the test in a championship-style event. The day included practice races, qualifying sessions, a semifinal and a championship final, creating a competitive conclusion to the week.

The Summer Speed Camp provided an opportunity for young drivers of different experience levels to learn more about racing while building confidence behind the wheel. With guidance from Dupont and plenty of track time at K1 Speed St. Catharines, campers finished the program with a stronger understanding of race craft and the techniques needed to continue improving their lap times.
