The conversation around NHL expansion is heating up again — and this time, it’s Atlanta back in the spotlight.
Last week, Forsyth County approved a $3 billion+ development project known as The Gathering at South Forsyth, a sprawling entertainment complex anchored by an NHL-ready arena. The project is being led by Krause Sports and Entertainment, and marks the strongest progress yet toward bringing professional hockey back to Georgia.
“This vote marks a catalytic step forward in bringing this visionary project to life,” said Krause CEO Vernon Krause. “Our team is more energized than ever as we prepare to meet with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to discuss possible expansion.”
Atlanta has a complicated NHL history. The city has hosted two NHL teams in the past — the Flames (1972–1980) and the Thrashers (1999–2011) — both of which eventually relocated to Canadian markets. But according to Bettman, that past doesn’t necessarily dictate the future.
“Atlanta is a different place,” he said earlier this year. “In terms of how big the city is, how robust it is, the sporting interest… I don’t think the prior two visits have any bearing on whether or not we would go back.”
The NHL has not formally committed to expanding beyond its current 32 teams, but interest is high. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly acknowledged that the league has had conversations with several potential ownership groups, and that they’re “gratified” by the level of engagement.
In addition to a professional hockey venue, The Gathering is planned as a 100-acre entertainment hub featuring retail, residential, commercial, and hospitality spaces. Local officials, including Forsyth County Commission Chair Alfred John, believe the development could elevate the region as a destination for sports and events.
“The dream of an NHL team in the region is one step closer to being realized,” John said. “The Gathering will not only be a world-class destination for sports and entertainment, but it also positions our county as a national leader in smart, forward-thinking development.”
While an NHL franchise in Atlanta is still speculative, the momentum has once again opened the door to conversations about hockey’s growth in new and emerging markets — not just at the NHL level, but across minor pro and junior hockey leagues throughout North America.
