The Toronto Rush are bringing high-level ultimate frisbee back to Varsity Stadium on Saturday, May 9, as they host the Montreal Royal in their 2026 home opener. With gates opening at 3 PM ahead of a 4 PM opening pull, the Saturday afternoon is set to feature fast-paced action, a refreshed Rush roster, and one of the organization’s biggest crowds of the season.
Fans attending the home opener can expect much more than just ultimate frisbee. The match will feature free concourse inflatable games, face painting, balloon artists, live music, prize giveaways, and a beer garden with food service available at field level throughout the afternoon.
Toronto heads into Varsity Stadium with a 1-1 record after opening the season on the road with a loss to the New York Empire before securing their first win of the year with a 24-17 victory over the Philadelphia Phoenix.
In what was dubbed the “Rush Reboot” during last year’s offseason, they brought in several seasoned European players, highlighted by Arvids Karklins in hopes of competing with East Division juggernauts such as Boston and New York. Despite their ambitious offseason additions, the Rush still finished near the bottom of the standings with a 3-9 record.
When this year’s offseason began, however, Toronto shifted their strategy. Instead, they targeted Canadian talent and roster continuity. The result is a group that looks noticeably different heading into the 2026 season.
Key additions include Gagan Chatha, Max Pettenuzzo, and Justin Podnar. Podnar and Pettenuzzo are joining forces in Toronto despite previously being rivals when they attended the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria. Returning former Toronto powerhouses Akifumi Muraoka and Isaiah Masek-Kelly also provide the Rush with a strong foundation heading into the season.
Toronto will also rely on 2025 standout James Lewis, who recorded 265 points played, 22 assists, and 32 goals across 11 games last season. How quickly the new pieces integrate into Toronto’s strategy could determine whether they remain in the playoff picture.
Although the Rush opened the season with a tough 24-15 loss to the New York Empire, they showed flashes of potential against one of the league’s premier franchises led by Ben Jagt, who recorded 323 points played last season, just three shy of the league lead.
The following day against Philadelphia, several Rush players made strong first impressions. Rookie Eric Zhuang recorded an impressive five blocks and a layout goal while showcasing elite defensive range and instincts, covering so much ground defensively it looked like he had six arms!
One of the highlight moments from opening weekend came when newly acquired Gagan Chatha, equipped with Team Canada experience, connected with Evan Bembenista on a hammer throw with just 0.1 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Bembenista tracked down the hammer and pulled in the dart to give Toronto an early buzzer-beater, extending their lead to 7-4 in the early going.
Following Saturday’s matchup at home against Montreal, the Rush will head to Montreal for a rematch before returning to Varsity Stadium for three games against DC, Boston, and Pittsburgh.
