One of the most powerful forces in this movement is Hockey Equality, the NHL and NHLPA’s nonprofit dedicated to leveling the ice for BIPOC, female, and equity-deserving youth in hockey
Founded in 2021 by former NHL player Anthony Stewart, Hockey Equality was created with a mission: to remove the financial and systemic barriers that have historically kept many young athletes from fully participating in Canada’s game. Through grassroots programs, mentorship, on-ice development, and advocacy programs, Hockey Equality is reshaping the face of hockey and creating opportunities that last well beyond the rink.
Cary Kaplan, President of Cosmos Sports & Entertainment, shared his excitement about supporting Hockey Equality with their mission:

Hockey Equality also runs key events including Summer Hockeyfest on the final day of Black History Month, and the annual Black Hockey Summit. This summer, the 2025 Black Hockey Summit takes centre ice in Toronto from July 14–18 at Scotiabank Pond. The Summit brings together youth, coaches, and leaders from BIPOC-led hockey programs across the Greater Toronto Area for a week of hockey development, fun and educational opportunities geared towards growing diversity in the future leaders of our hockey community.
More than just a hockey camp, the Black Hockey Summit is a platform for empowerment. Cosmos Sports & Entertainment is proud to partner with Hockey Equality, a collaboration that will see Cosmos leading sponsorship sales for the Black Hockey Summit and the organization’s other key events. Cosmos will strive to expand Hockey Equality’s reach and impact across Canada and beyond.
