The Barrie Colts have officially been sold, marking the end of a significant chapter for one of the Ontario Hockey League’s most established franchises.
The OHL announced that it has approved the transfer of ownership from longtime majority owner and president Howie Campbell to Toronto-area entrepreneur and sports executive John Careri. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Campbell purchased the Colts from Barrie businessman Jamie Massie in 2006. During his 20 years as majority owner, the team captured three Eastern Conference championships, advancing to the OHL final in 2010, 2013 and 2026.
The Colts also developed several prominent NHL players during that period, including Aaron Ekblad, Mark Scheifele, Andrei Svechnikov, Rasmus Andersson and Mackenzie Blackwood.
Campbell is expected to remain involved as an adviser for five years, providing continuity throughout the ownership transition. He leaves the franchise in a strong position following its 2026 Eastern Conference championship and appearance in the OHL final.
The sale demonstrates the continued interest in Canadian Hockey League ownership opportunities. OHL franchises rarely become available, particularly established teams with dedicated fanbases, strong community connections and long-term arena relationships.
Purchasing an existing franchise provides immediate access to league membership, territorial rights, sponsorship relationships and decades of brand recognition. These characteristics continue to make junior hockey teams attractive assets for investors seeking opportunities in sports ownership.
The Colts have been part of the Barrie sports community since joining the OHL in 1995. Their history, established local presence and recent success provide a strong foundation for the franchise’s next chapter.
The Colts will move forward with new majority ownership while retaining the experience and institutional knowledge of their longtime owner.
With Campbell remaining involved and the team coming off an appearance in the OHL final, the organization enters the transition from a position of strength.
The Colts will open training camp in late August as they prepare for the 2026-27 OHL season and the beginning of a new era for junior hockey in Barrie.
